UFL Week 3 roundup: 1 undefeated team remains
Three weeks into its second season, the United Football League has one undefeated team. In a clash between 2-0 teams on Sunday, the DC Defenders defeated the St. Louis Battlehawks 27-15.
In the UFL’s other Week 3 games:
- Quarterback Matt Corral threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Cade Johnson, then ran in a 1-point conversion with 26 seconds remaining to lift the Birmingham Stallions to a 10-9 victory over the Arlington Renegades on Friday night. The Renegades lost for the first time this season.
- The Houston Roughnecks stopped a 2-point conversion pass with 13 seconds to play to defeat the Memphis Showboats 18-7 and end their eight-game losing streak on Saturday. Memphis quarterback Troy Williams capped a 9:50 possession with a 4-yard touchdown run on a fourth-down snap – the third fourth-down conversion of the series – to give the Showboats an opportunity to win the game.
- B.T. Potter’s 28-yard field goal with 51 seconds to play provided the winning margin in the Michigan Panthers’ 26-23 victory over the San Antonio Brahmas on Sunday. San Antonio kicker Donald De La Haye, who made three field goals in the game, including a 55-yarder, missed from 53 yards on the contest’s final snap.
In a game that featured three interceptions by the Defenders and two for the Battlehawks, DC quarterback Jordan Ta’amu also threw for 243 yards and three touchdowns.
Ta’amu’s final touchdown pass – a 3-yarder to Cornell Powell – came with 2:21 to play and gave the Defenders a 24-15 lead. Ta’amu’s first TD pass went 62 yards to Ty Scott in the first quarter.
Fifteen players from Alabama high schools and colleges got on the field during the UFL’s Week 3 games:
Birmingham Stallions 10, Arlington Renegades 9
- Deonte Brown (Austin, Alabama) started at left guard for the Stallions.
- Sal Cannella (Auburn) started at tight end for the Renegades. Cannella had six receptions for 52 yards, including Arlington’s longest play of the game – a 26-yard catch.
- Stallions cornerback Shyheim Carter (Alabama) was designated as a game-day inactive.
- Renegades defensive tackle DaVonte Lambert (Auburn) was designated as a game-day inactive.
- Stallions offensive lineman Lachavious Simmons (Selma) did not record any stats.
- Stallions wide receiver Austin Watkins (UAB) had a 9-yard reception.
- Marlon Williams (McGill-Toolen) started at wide receiver for the Stallions. Williams had four receptions for 41 yards.
Houston Roughnecks 18, Memphis Showboats 17
- Roughnecks defensive end Christopher Allen (Alabama) was designated as a game-day inactive.
- Showboats wide receiver Dee Anderson (Alabama A&M) was designated as a game-day inactive.
- Roughnecks defensive tackle Shakel Brown (Troy) made two tackles.
- Showboats cornerback Eric Garror (McGill-Toolen) made five tackles, broke up one pass and returned a kickoff 26 yards.
- Keenan Isaac (Midfield, Alabama State) started at cornerback for the Roughnecks. Isaac made three tackles, intercepted one pass and broke up another. Isaac intercepted Memphis quarterback E.J. Perry at the Houston 48-yard line with 3:34 left in the third quarter.
- Roughnecks offensive lineman Avery Jones (Auburn) did not record any stats.
- Punter Mike Rivers (Troy) averaged 54.3 yards on three punts. Rivers had a 55-yard punt for a touchback, a 55-yarder returned 13 yards to the Memphis 20 and a 53-yarder for a touchback.
- Showboats wide receiver Eli Stove (Auburn) was designated as a game-day inactive.
- Showboats tight end Jay Jay Wilson (Auburn) did not record any stats.
Michigan Panthers 26, San Antonio Brahmas 23
- Brahmas wide receiver Kawaan Baker (South Alabama) was designated as a game-day inactive.
- Panthers offensive tackle Cam Carter (Minor) was designated as a game-day inactive. Carter joined Michigan in a trade with the Houston Roughnecks on Tuesday.
- Panthers outside linebacker De’Gabriel Floyd (Alabama A&M) is on the injured list and not eligible to play.
- Garrett Marino (UAB) started at defensive tackle for the Panthers. Marino made two tackles and recorded one sack.
DC Defenders 27, St. Louis Battlehawks 15
- Defenders long snapper/tight end Trae Barry (Spanish Fort, Jacksonville State) handled the snaps on four punts.
- Defenders offensive tackle Gunner Britton (Auburn) did not record any stats.
- Tykeem Doss (Aliceville) started at left guard for the Defenders.
In the UFL’s Week 4 games:
- The Showboats (0-3) and Panthers (2-1) play at 7 p.m. CDT Friday at Ford Field in Detroit. FOX will televise the game.
- The Battlehawks (2-1) and the Renegades (2-1) play at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Choctaw Stadium in Arlington, Texas. ABC will televise the game.
- The Stallions (2-1) and Roughnecks (1-2) play at 6 p.m. Saturday at TDECU Stadium in Houston. FOX will televise the game.
- The Brahmas (0-3) and the Defenders (3-0) play at 4 p.m. Sunday at Audi Field in Washington. FOX will televise the game.
