UAH transfer Chaney Johnson commits to Auburn
Auburn added a second transfer portal pickup, and it comes in the form of an in-state player who broke out at the Division II level.
Chaney Johnson, a 6-foot-7 wing out of University of Alabama-Huntsville, committed to Auburn on Friday afternoon, he announced on social media. His commitment came just hours after he completed a visit to the Plains to check out Bruce Pearl’s program firsthand.

Johnson joins Florida International transfer guard Denver Jones and 2023 signee Aden Holloway, a McDonald’s All-America guard, as Auburn’s newest additions for the 2023-24 season as Pearl restructures the Tigers’ roster this offseason.
Johnson, a native of Alabaster, comes to Auburn after a junior campaign in which he was named the Gulf South Conference Player of the Year while averaging 15.9 points per game on 51.8 percent shooting overall, while pulling down 6.6 rebounds per game and adding 1.6 assists and 1.1 steals per game for UAH.
The prelude to his junior season included a trip to Neville Arena, where Johnson a team-high 14 points and added five rebounds in an exhibition loss to Auburn. Now Johnson, who should have two years of eligibility remaining, will call Neville Arena home as part of the new-look Auburn roster.
Originally a guard who checked in at 6-foot-5 as a freshman in 2020-21, Johnson has developed into more of a versatile option at forward and projects as either a three or a four in Pearl’s system.
His commitment to Auburn is the latest offseason development for Pearl’s program, which is undergoing a deal of change following a second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, and second consecutive second-round exit. Auburn is losing both members of its starting backcourt, with Zep Jasper out of eligibility and All-SEC point guard Wendell Green Jr. declaring for the NBA Draft. Freshmen Yohan Traore and Chance Westry both entered the transfer portal, with Westry recently committing to Syracuse, while reserve big man Stretch Akingbola also announced his plans to hit the portal as a graduate transfer after completing his coursework this summer.
The Tigers’ starting frontcourt tandem of Johni Broome and Jaylin Williams also declared for the draft this week. Broome, an All-SEC selection, and Williams both plan to retain their eligibility and are likely to return for the 2023-24 season. Meanwhile, senior Allen Flanigan — the Tigers’ starting wing — has yet to announce his intentions. Flanigan still has a fifth year of eligibility remaining. His father, Wes Flanigan, also left the program earlier this month after five seasons as an assistant on Pearl’s staff. Auburn officially hired his replacement Friday, adding former Texas Tech assistant Corey Williams.
