UAB’s Yaxel Lendeborg honored by American Athletic Conference

UAB men’s basketball star Yaxel Lendeborg has been named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week after leading the Blazers to conference wins over Tulane and Florida Atlantic.

This marks the first conference weekly honor for the Blazers this season.

Lendeborg finished with 25 points, 13 rebounds and a career-high eight rebounds in UAB’s win over Tulane on Tuesday, nearly earning the program’s first triple-double since 2008 in the 81-69 victory.

Against Florida Atlantic on Sunday, the senior posted another double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds to go along with seven assists and two blocks; the victory marked UAB’s first road win over the Owls since the 2019-2020 season.

Lendeborg is averaging a double-double per game this season with 16.71 points per game and 10.21 rebounds per game; he leads the AAC in rebounding and ranks eighth in points per game.

He also ranks third in the conference in blocked shots (27), fifth in field goal percentage (.589) and sixth in assists per game (3.94).

According to a release, he and Duke freshman Cooper Flagg are the only two players in the country who lead their respective teams in scoring, rebounding, assists, blocks and steals.

UAB (10-7, 3-1 AAC) will play at South Florida on Wednesday before returning home for a matchup against UTSA on Jan. 21.
