UAB’s Matt Quinn, Sierra Frazier and Asha Zuniga named CUSA Scholar Athletes of the Year

The Conference USA league office released its list of 16 recipients for the 2022-2023 Scholar Athlete of the Year awards on Wednesday and UAB’s Matt Quinn (football), Sierra Frazier (softball) and Asha Zuniga (women’s soccer) all received the annual honor presented to the top student-athlete in each conference-sponsored sport based on academic achievement, athletic achievement and service.

Zuniga is the third UAB women’s soccer player to win the award, along with Denise Peters (2002) and Briana McCarty (2005), and earned the 2022 Fall Spirit of Service Award given to the league’s student-athletes who contribute to the community through service project efforts. She carries a 3.97 GPA in Healthcare Management and is on the Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll, UAB Dean’s List and the UAB President’s List.

Zuniga is the reigning CUSA Defender of the Year and was named All-CUSA first team, All-CUSA academic team and helped lead the Blazers to a No. 4 ranking in the final United Soccer Coaches South Region poll.

“It’s an honor to be recognized for this award,” Zuniga said. “It shows just how much work student-athletes put in, academically, athletically and within our community.”

Frazier had an incredible career on the diamond and a more impressive showing in the classroom during her time at UAB. She graduated with a 3.8 GPA, earning a Bachelor of Science in kinesiology, and was named an NFCA Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2019 and a mainstay on Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll, UAB Dean’s List and the UAB President’s List.

In her final season with the Blazers, Frazier was named All-CUSA first team and CUSA Player of the Year.

Matt Quinn enters his final season for the UAB football team having already graduated this past semester with a bachelor’s degree in accounting and finance. He finished with a 3.90 GPA and is a member of the CUSA Commissioner’s Honor Roll, UAB Dean’s List and the UAB President’s List.

For his career, Quinn is 36-of-47 on field goals, missing only two extra-point attempts, and is fourth in career field goal percentage (.765) and seventh in career points (233) in UAB history.
