UAB takes down FAU, 89-80 on senior night at Bartow Arena

One of the more memorable senior classes in UAB memory got to say a possible farewell to Bartow Arena on Thursday night.

However, it was a junior that stole the show.

UAB guard Ja’Borri McGhee set a new career-high in points with 27 as UAB beat Florida Atlantic 89-80. His 27 points eclipsed his then-career high 22 points vs. Memphis on March 2.

“It feels good. I just want to be consistent. Coming off another career-high with the L, my main focus was to just win this game and the next one and the next one,” McGhee said post-game.

The victory also impacted the upcoming conference tournament. UAB will be at worst, the No.3 seed in the upcoming AAC tournament with one game remaining in the regular season.

Notable names such as Yaxel Lendeborg, Alejandro Vasquez and Tony Toney were celebrated as they potentially played their last games in Birmingham.

Lendeborg scored 16 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and recorded five assists in his sendoff to the Bartow crowd, good for his 19th double-double of the season, but the Blazers won this game behind a combined 45 points from their backcourt.

His backcourt partner Alejandro Vasquez added 18 points, four rebounds and two assists in his last game as a Blazer.

“Really proud of my guys man, we did what we had to do offensively, and you have 14 assists and only three turnovers, and then you win points off turnovers,” Blazers head coach Andy Kennedy said.

“Memphis in our last half of basketball in Bartow shot over 60% from the floor. So, I’m very open in that we don’t deserve to win, especially in your own building, when you can’t defend better than giving your opponent 60% (shooting). First half, FAU shot 60% so I’m like ‘guys, we have to get more physical, we have to get grittier, we have to play with a little force,” Blazers’ head coach Andy Kennedy said after the win.

The Owls went into halftime with a lead over UAB and kept it close in the second half thanks to stellar play from 7-foot freshman center Matas Vokietaitas, who finished the game with 21 points on 9-of-10 shooting and eight rebounds.

Florida Atlantic finished the game with a 35-33 rebound advantage over the Blazers who continue to struggle on the boards on both ends when confronted with seven-footers.

The Blazers final regular season game comes on Sunday afternoon when UAB visits Tulane at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
