UAB purchases downtown Birmingham’s Daniel Building for $16 million

UAB has acquired a visible piece of Birmingham’s skyline.

The UAB Medicine Enterprise has purchased the Daniel Building, located at 15 20th St. S., for $16 million, according to Lynn Lowe Cole, vice chancellor for system communications for the University of Alabama System.

The UA System Board of Trustees approved the purchase on Sept. 1.

The 19-floor tower went on the market last year. It is the tallest building outside the Magic City’s central business district.

The tower has an attached private deck with 390 parking spaces and 644 surface parking spaces, according to its listing with Graham & Co.

“The office space offers the opportunity to locate and consolidate administrative and support services and provide space to accommodate UAB Medicine’s growing enterprise,” Dawn Bulgarella, CEO of the UAB Health System and CEO of the UAB/Ascension St. Vincent’s Alliance, said. “Its proximity to UAB Medicine facilities will provide opportunities to expand clinical care facilities in alignment with the UAB Medicine Facility Master Plan.”

The board also authorized UAB to acquire a one-story 6,100-square-foot office building 1715 11th Ave. S. for $1.15 million, contingent upon inspection and review.
