UAB plans $167 million in construction, renovations for facilities, emergency department
The University of Alabama System board of trustees unanimously approved multiple construction items for the Birmingham campus on Feb. 7.
The projects include a new student service building, plus hospital and research building renovations.
Zeigler Medical Research Building
The board approved plans to renovate the fifth floor of the Zeigler Building at 703 19th St. South in Birmingham.
The 11,800-square foot renovated space includes research, imaging and procedure spaces and costs $13 million.
Student Services Building
Trustees approved the demolition of Campbell Hall and construction of a new student services and administration building at 1300 University Blvd. in Birmingham.
The 134,000-square foot space will house the president, provost, finance and administration, public relations and university relations. The four-story building will also include admissions, the registrar’s office, financial aid, a writing center and an academic success center.
The project budget is $84 million from future UAB bond funds and the institutional central reserve fund.
University Hospital
The board approved a 42,600-square foot expansion of UAB Health System’s downtown Birmingham emergency department. More than 29,000 square feet of the current space will be renovated.
This renovation includes 59 exam rooms, additional waiting space and expanded imaging capabilities.
The project budget is $70 million through state ETF supplemental appropriation and hospital plant funds.
The hospital has been working on the emergency department’s entrance and other updates for a while.
The board also approved renovations and new construction for the Tuscaloosa campus.
