UAB contributes $8.3 billion to Birmingham’s economy according to a recent report

In 2022 UAB Health and Academic systems and UAB affiliate Southern Research contributed over $12 billion in statewide economic impact, according to a report recently released by Pittsburgh-based economic development consulting firm Tripp Umbach.

Nearly 70% of this impact, or $8.3 billion, directly benefitted Birmingham and its residents, according to the report.

UAB systems and Birmingham’s Southern Research were responsible for over 70,000 sustained jobs and over $155 million in state and local taxes for the city in 2022, the report said.

“It’s fair to say that I am not surprised with the size of the economic benefit, but I am thrilled that we are able to communicate that figure, that number of jobs, and that dollar amount of state support back to the public as a whole,” said newly appointed UAB Health System CEO Dawn Bulgarella.

UAB’s last impact report was conducted in 2016 and while Birmingham-area figures are not available for comparison in that report, statewide figures cited by Tripp Umbach, show an increased impact of roughly $5 billion, or 41% since then.
