UAB basketball’s Barry Dunning in transfer portal again

UAB guard Barry Dunning, a former Mr. Basketball from Mobile, is in the NCAA transfer portal for a second straight year.

Dunning played in 15 games for the Blazers this past season, totaling 65 minutes. He played three minutes in UAB’s season-ending loss to San Diego State in the first round of the NCAA tournament this past Friday, totaling two rebounds and an assist.

The website Verbal Commits first reported Dunning was in the transfer portal. AL.com confirmed the news via a source.

The 6-foot-6 Dunning starred at Mobile’s McGill-Toolen Catholic School, averaging 25.3 points, 12.9 rebounds and 3.3 steals per game as a senior. In addition to being named the 2022 Mr. Basketball by the Alabama Sports Writers Association, he was a three-time first-team all-state pick and Most Valuable Player of the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic.

Dunning signed with Arkansas prior to his senior year at McGill, and appeared in 16 games with one start as a freshman with the Razorbacks in 2022-23. In 31 career games at Arkansas and UAB, he has averaged 3.8 minutes, 0.7 points and 0.6 rebounds.

Dunning seriously considered South Alabama while in high school and when he left Arkansas last year, but is not expected to be pursued by the Jaguars this time around.
