UAB basketball signs UNA transfer Daniel Ortiz
What a difference a day makes.
On Monday night, UNA transfer guard Daniel Ortiz shared a recruiting photo during a visit to the UAB basketball program but made sure to add a “NotCommitted” hashtag to his social media post.
A little more than 12 hours later, Ortiz removed his own interim tag as the Blazers announced his official signing for the 2023-2024 season, the first year of competition for UAB in the American Athletic Conference.
“We are excited to have Daniel join our Blazer basketball family,” UAB head coach Andy Kennedy said, “He is a legit shooter who can make plays with the ball which will allow him the opportunity to make an immediate impact in our backcourt. He helped lead UNA to their most wins in program history since transitioning to Division I and we are all about winning at UAB basketball.”

Ortiz prepped at Calvery Baptist in Shreveport, Louisiana, leading his team to a No. 4 national ranking in 2020 and a runner-up finish in the state tournament the following year, and signed with the Lions in the 2021 recruiting cycle. UNA head coach Tony Pujol, who has led the program for five seasons, was an assistant under former Alabama head coach Anthony Grant from 2010-2014.
During his time with the Lions, Ortiz led the team in scoring each season and scored double digits in 45 of his 63 career games. He averaged 14.6 points in his two-year UNA career, setting a career-high of 32 points in a win over North Florida, and was named second-team All-ASUN after leading the Lions to the most wins in school history as a Division I program. Ortiz shot 34.3 percent from 3-point range in his freshman season and increased his accuracy this past season in shooting 40.9 percent from distance.
Ortiz is the first transfer portal addition for UAB this offseason and joins JUCO signees Chris Coleman (Villa Maria) and Alejandro Vasquez (Salt Lake) and prep signee KJ Satterfield (Patrick School, N.J.)
The Blazers lost six seniors to graduation, Jordan “Jelly” Walker, Trey “The Mayor” Jemison, KJ Buffen, Tavin Lovan and Ledarrius and Ty Brewer, and two more players (Tyler Bertram and Rongie Gordon) to the transfer portal since the conclusion of the season. UAB finished with a 29-10 overall record — setting the program record for wins in a single season — and a second-place finish in the NIT, falling to North Texas in the NIT championship game.
