UAB basketball coach Andy Kennedy has plans on sticking around the Southside a little bit longer.

An extension to Kennedy’s current contract was approved today at a University of Alabama System Compensation Committee meeting, according to a source familiar with the situation.

Kennedy’s contract pays the fourth-year UAB coach $1 million per year and will increase by $100,000 each season for the length of the terms.

According to the source, Kennedy’s contract has seen minor adjustments in language following each season and the current extension was agreed upon at the conclusion of the 2022-2023 campaign — prior to unfounded reports of Kennedy interviewing for the open position at West Virginia — but did not reach the compensation committee until Monday.

The Blazers are 78-25 in three years under Kennedy, including the 2022 CUSA tournament title and NIT runner-up finish last season.

UAB returns Eric Gaines, Javian Davis, Tony Toney and Efrem “Butta” Johnson and signed a wealth of talent in the offseason. The Blazers hit the transfer portal for the likes of Arkansas’s Barry Dunning, Ole Miss sophomore James White and former Oak Mountain standout and UNC transfer WIll Shaver, and signed a star-studded JUCO class that includes three of the top 10 players in the nation.
