UAB basketball adds Iona transfer Greg Gordon

Yaxel Lendeborg pretty much let the cat out of the bag.

The UAB basketball team was honored for the 2024 AAC tournament title Saturday during a Birmingham Stallions game and the rising senior forward posted a photo of himself and future UAB teammate Greg Gordon on his social media accounts.

The Blazers officially announced the signing of Iona transfer Greg Demani Gordon on Monday, two days after Lendeborg’s post went live on social media.

“We are excited to welcome Demani to Blazer Basketball.” UAB coach Andy Kennedy said, “He is a strong, versatile guard capable of impacting the game in a multitude of ways. His ability to get to the paint and rebound the basketball are big additions to our backcourt.”

Gordon, a Chicago native who prepped at Coral Springs (Fla.), began his career in junior college at Dyersburg State (Tenn.) before signing with Iona before last season. He averaged 23.1 points and 11.4 rebounds during his two seasons at Dyersburg State, ranking second in rebounds (12.2) in the NJCAA in 2021-2022 and tenth (10.6) in 2022-2023, and earned NJCAA All-American status in both seasons.

The 6-foot-5, 210-pound guard played and started all 24 games he appeared for the Gaels — leaving the program in late February for personal reasons — and posted nine double-doubles while averaging 16 points, 7.3 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.5 steals.

Gordon joins current UAB players Christian Coleman, Marquis Hargrove, Yaxel Lendeborg, and Alejandro Vasquez as members of the 2023 JUCO recruiting class. Coleman (2), Vasquez (4) and Lendeborg (9) were all ranked in the top 10, according to JUCOrecruiting.com, while Gordon was ranked 16th before signing with Iona.

The Blazers finished 23-12 this past season and won the AAC tournament title on the way to their 17th NCAA tournament appearance in program history. UAB returns four of five starters and a core group of contributors for the 2024-2025 season.
