U.S. Marshals capture 4th suspect in death of 5-year-old boy killed in hail of gunfire while getting his hair cut

A fourth suspect has been taken into connection in the Bessemer shooting that killed a 5-year-old boy while he was getting his hair cut.

The U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task force took Anthony Demarrious Steverson into custody Thursday morning. He was arrested on 52nd Street in Fairfield.

He is charged with capital murder in the slaying of Brandon Nation III, and attempted murder in the wounding of the 25-year-old man who was cutting the child’s hair at the time the shots were fired.

Steverson has not yet been booked into the Jefferson County Jail.

The deadly shooting happened at 10:15 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 7, in the 500 block of Seventh Avenue North.

Also charged with capital murder and attempted murder Kendrick Rondell O’Neal, 26, Tatyonna Estacia Smith, 24, and Kedarrius Odell Mack, 25.

Authorities have not said why the adult victim was targeted.

Brandon’s paternal grandmother had taken him to the adult victim’s home for a haircut, which was taking place in an enclosed front porch.

Authorities said O’Neal was accompanied by others when they pulled up to the home with the intention of killing the adult victim. Three people got out O’Neal’s vehicle and opened fire with automatic weapons into the enclosed front porch.

Brandon was struck in the head. He was taken to Children’s of Alabama, where he was pronounced dead.

The adult victim was taken to UAB Hospital with critical injuries.

Police said dozens of rounds were fired. Several other people were inside the home but were not injured.
