Tyre Nichols’ mother, RowVaughn Wells, to Don Lemon: Officers brought ‘shame on the Black community’
While authorities on Friday were set to release police video depicting five Black Memphis police officers beating a 29-year-old Tyre Nichols, also Black, whose death prompted murder charges, the mother of Nichols is speaking out.
RowVaughn Wells told CNN’s Don Lemon the officers involved in her son’s death brought shame to the Black community.
“People try to say Black people, we only try to go after white officers,” Wells explained. “That’s not true. We don’t care what color the officer is. We want bad officers taken off the force.
“We know there’s a lot of great officers. I know officers, but there are bad officers, too. Those are the ones we need to get rid of. …
“I don’t care what color a police officer, but by them being Black, it hurt the Black community.”
The officers were charged Thursday with murder and other crimes in the killing of Nichols, a motorist who died three days after a confrontation with the officers during a traffic stop on Jan. 7.
Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy told a news conference that although the officers each played different roles in the killing, “they are all responsible.”
Nichols’ family members and their lawyers said the footage shows officers beating the FedEx worker for three minutes.
Wells was asked by Lemon what she would want to say to the officers.
“You have to show compassion to people,” she said. “We all know that a lot of these police officers intimidate Black people in order to do something. They are waiting for them to do something. They need to learn that everyone is human and everyone should be treated with respect.”
