After throwing two interceptions in a loss to Texas, Alabama QB Jalen Milroe is reportedly moving to the bench, with Notre Dame transfer Tyler Buchner taking over.
Self-inflicted mistakes were costly in the Crimson Tide’s first loss at Bryant-Denny Stadium since 2019. Milroe made a few phenomenal throws but also struggled with accuracy.
With SEC play around the corner, Nick Saban is moving Milroe down the depth chart in favor of Buchner, who appeared in 13 games for Notre Dame in 2021 and 2022. The news was reported by 247Sports.
How Tyler Buchner’s promotion impacts Alabama’s SEC Championship, National Championship odds
Buchner joined Alabama in April after uninspiring performances from the Tide’s QBs in the spring game. The 20-year-old lost the preseason QB battle to Milroe but has apparently shown enough in practice for Saban to feel comfortable making a switch.
The Evanston, Illinois native appeared in 10 games for the Fighting Irish in 2021, going 21/35 passing for 298 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions. Last year, Buchner played in three games, going 46/83 passing for 651 yards, three touchdowns, and five picks.
Buchner started the opening two games of 2022 as Notre Dame’s QB1, suffering losses to Ohio State (10/18 passing, 177 yards) and Marshall (18/32 passing, 201 yards, two interceptions).
Milroe looked good in the season opener vs. Middle Tennessee but wasn’t up to snuff vs. Texas’ quality defense. Buchner’s numbers with Notre Dame last season are worrisome but should be taken with a grain of salt, considering it was Marcus Freeman’s first year as head coach of the Fighting Irish. Transitional pains are inevitable when a new coach takes the helm.
What to know about Alabama’s new QB Tyler Buchner, Heisman odds (+15000 or better)
Buchner should be comfortable in the Crimson Tide’s offense, as he’s working with offensive coordinator Tommy Rees. Rees was Notre Dame’s OC while Buchner was in South Bend, and Rees was the main recruiter tasked with getting Buchner to commit to Notre Dame.
Buchner is a former three-star prospect who played high school ball at The Bishop’s School and Helix Charter High School. He had multiple offers from major college programs, including Alabama.
Buchner’s first test comes on the road against South Florida. The Bulls allowed 336 passing yards and two passing scores in a Week 1 loss to Western Kentucky and gave up 374 passing yards and a touchdown in a Week 2 win over Florida A&M.
