Ty Simpson hopes to be Alabama football’s starting QB in 2025

At least one of Alabama football’s quarterbacks is looking to return for 2025. Ty Simpson, in an interview with the Crimson Tide Sports Network that was released on Tuesday, said he hopes to come back as the UA starter next season.

Simpson has served as Alabama’s primary backup this season, with Jalen Milroe holding down the starting role.

“My job is for the offense not to skip a beat,” Simpson said. “In case something happens to Jalen. Whether it’s in practice or in the warmups or anything like that, knowing that the guys have confidence in me that, ‘OK, Jalen is out. We’re gonna down and win the game no matter what, even if Ty’s in.’

“So that’s my job as the backup quarterback. And hopefully next year, that’ll be my job, to be the guy and know that the next guy is ready.”

Simpson, a redshirt sophomore, has seen action in five games so far this season. His most extensive action came in the Crimson Tide’s blowout win over Mercer on Nov. 16, when he completed five of his 10 passing attempts for 71 yards.

A former five-star prospect, Simpson competed with Milroe and Tyler Buchner for the starting job in 2023. Milroe won the job, and though Simpson did see the field at times, especially in Alabama’s narrow win against South Florida, he was largely a backup.

Simpson opted to remain in Tuscaloosa after Nick Saban retired and Kalen DeBoer took over as Alabama’s head coach. He said during the interview that he considered himself a leader for the Tide, despite not starting.

“Certainly, especially since coming back,” Simpson said. “In this day and age, a lot of people would have probably left, especially with the circumstances that I had.”

Milroe has one more year of eligibility, though he has referred to this season as his senior year, and is highly ranked among QBs in the upcoming NFL Draft. Alabama also has Austin Mack and Dylan Lonergan on the roster, and five-star Keelon Russell coming in as part of its 2025 class.

Alabama will be back in action Saturday at 2:30 p.m. CT in Tuscaloosa against Auburn. The Iron Bowl will be aired on ABC.
