Two tornadoes confirmed so far from Tuesday storms

The National Weather Service is continuing to look at storm damage in south Alabama following severe storms on Monday and Tuesday.

So far two tornadoes have been confirmed in Alabama, according to meteorologists. However, the weather service is continuing to survey storm-damaged areas as of Thursday, and the tornado count could climb.

One of the storms devastated the small Houston County town of Cottonwood and killed one person.

The National Weather Service in Tallahassee, Fla., which covers five counties in southeast Alabama including Houston County, planned to survey the damage in southeast Alabama today.

The weather service office in Mobile has confirmed one EF-1 tornado and one EF-0 tornado in Baldwin County so far, and storm surveys are also planned for Mobile County.

The weather service said it will release more info on the storm surveys as it becomes available.

Here’s preliminary information on the two Baldwin County tornadoes:

* Steelwood tornado (Baldwin County): EF-1, 100 mph maximum winds: Path length 2.8 miles; path width 50 yards, no injuries. The tornado touched down at 4:33 a.m. Tuesday and was on the ground for about 3 minutes. The tornado touched down in a neighborhood of U.S. Highway 31 and tracked eastward on Cambron Trail, damaging the roofs of several homes and many fences. The tornado then crossed Highway 31, damaging trees along the way. The tornado crossed State Highway 59 and likely peaked in intensity. The tornado likely continued east but the area was inaccessible.

* Robertsdale tornado (Baldwin County): EF-0, maximum winds 75 mph. Path length 5.09 miles; path width 20 yards. No injuries. The tornado touched down at 4:38 a.m. Tuesday near Dick Higbee Road near St. Michael Catholic High School and was on the ground for 8 minutes. The tornado continued eastward and damaged trees before dissipating near Woodpecker Road.

More information on any other tornadoes that are confirmed will be added when it becomes available.
