Two tornadoes confirmed from storms on Saturday

At least two tornadoes touched down in Alabama during Saturday’s round of severe weather.

The two tornadoes, both in southwest Alabama, bring the twister total to five in the past week in Alabama.

Alabama has been hit with wave after wave of severe storms starting one week ago. More storms will be possible in the state tonight as well as on Monday and Tuesday, according to NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center.

The National Weather Service in Mobile confirmed the latest two tornadoes after storm surveys on Sunday. Both tornadoes were EF-0s. There were no reported injuries. The weather service earlier confirmed a third tornado in the region from Friday.

The first touched down just after midnight on Saturday in Mobile County near Irvington, according to a preliminary report from the weather service. It was part of a line of severe storms that moved through the area.

It had top winds of 80 mph, a path length of 3.92 miles and a path width of 80 yards.

It touched down at 12:21 a.m. Saturday just south of Old Pascagoula Road. The tornado damaged trees, then crossed over Interstate 10 and damaged the underskirts of two manufactured homes. The tornado traveled down McDonald Road, damaging trees, then traveled toward Half Mile Road, where a farm building was damaged. The tornado then likely lifted near Cornelius Road. Straight-line wind damage was also found in the tornado track area, the weather service said.

The next tornado was also and EF-0 but touched down in Baldwin County.

It had top winds of 75 mph, a path length of 3.56 miles and a path width of 20 yards. There were no injuries.

The tornado touched down at 4:30 p.m. Saturday northeast of Elsanor just north of Interstate 10 and west of County Road 87. The tornado headed southeast and snapped some trees. Then, the weather service said, it slowed and stalled for a brief time over forest to the north of Timber County Road before turning northeast and crossing I-10 near Mile Marker 59.

It got stronger once it crossed the interstate but then headed into forested area, where it likely dissipated.

These were not the only two tornadoes this past week.

The weather service in Mobile confirmed an EF-1 tornado touched down on Friday in Mobile County. It was a rare storm that rotated anticyclonically, according to the storm survey.

There were also two confirmed tornadoes from Wednesday’s severe storms. Both of those tornadoes were EF-1s, and both were in southeast Alabama. There were no injuries.

More strong to severe storms will be possible overnight in Alabama, and the Storm Prediction Center thinks severe storms will be possible both Monday and Tuesday in south Alabama.
