Two charged in Birmingham drive-by shooting that killed 17-year-old

Two suspects have been charged in the targeted drive-by shooting death of a Birmingham teen.

Edjuan Figguers, 21, and Deleon Hawkins, 22, are charged with capital murder in the Thursday night killing of 17-year-old Lorenzo Davis Jr., a Huffman High School student.

Police said believe the deadly shooting could have stemmed from a previous argument between the victim and one or both of the suspects.

The barrage of gunfire rang out about 11:30 p.m. Thursday in the 2900 block of 29th Avenue North in Birmingham’s Collegeville public housing community

When officers arrived at the complex, they found Davis unresponsive inside an apartment. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced him dead on the scene at 11:50 p.m.

Investigators put out evidence markers in the double-digits, most of them noting the presence of shell casings.

Dozens of family members and friends gathered outside the crime scene, visibly distraught. Both parents of the victim were also there and collapsed to the ground in grief.

“My baby is dead,” the tearful mother said.

Officer De’Rell Freeman said the police department’s BPD’s Special Operations Bureau, the Crime Reduction Team and the Tactical Unit, with support from the Real Time Crime Center, worked together to make the swift arrests happen.

The arrest teams were accompanied by Police Chief Michael Pickett.

Figguers taken into custody in the 900 block of Ninth Street Southwest. Hawkins was arrested in the 300 block of Second Street West.

Both suspects will be held without bond in the Jefferson County Jail.

“This is another example of what happens when strategy, urgency, and accountability meet in real time,” Pickett said. “We are committed to moving quickly, working smart, and showing this city that violence will not go unanswered.”
