Two Birmingham department heads exit Woodfin administration
Two department leaders are leaving Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodin’s administration.
Cornell Wesley, the director of Birmingham’s Department of Innovation and Economic Opportunity, and Galvin Billups, director of the Department of Youth Services, are leaving city hall.
In a press release issued today, Woodfin responded to questions about the status of the departments following speculation that changes were coming.

Wesley, a Birmingham native, is leaving city hall to take a new role out of state, Woodfin said.
“We thank Cornell for his service and wish him continued success in this next chapter,” Woodfin said.
The mayor’s announcement directly contradicts his statements made to AL.com Wednesday afternoon when he bristled at questions regarding his staff and insisted that there were no changes in his administration.
Woodfin today said he has appointed Coreata’ Houser as interim director of Innovation and Economic Opportunity beginning July 24.
Houser most recently served as senior deputy director of youth services.
In addition, Traci Bennett was named interim director of the Department of Youth Services beginning Monday.

“We’re confident in Coreata’s and Traci’s abilities to lead with purpose and integrity,” Woodfin said. “Their leadership will ensure continued momentum as we invest in the economic strength and future of our city.”
