Two arrested in south Alabama with $50,000 in counterfeit Apple products, officials say

Two people arrested Tuesday by Baldwin County authorities are believed to be a part of a counterfeit operation of $50,000 in Apple products and fraudulent Apple products.

According to a news release, deputies with the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Department seized approximately 180 counterfeit electronic products during a traffic stop.

Vincent Tang of Malaysia, who was driving a California-plated Toyota, was arrested for his alleged involvement in a multi-state counterfeiting operation where he would obtain legitimate Apple products from Target, engrave the obtained serial numbers on the counterfeited items, and return the products in exchange for a refund.

A second person, Chalvin Tan, was contacted at the Sheriff’s Office Investigations Command in Robertsdale and was detained for questioning after he arrived. A subsequent search revealed that Tan was found in possession of additional counterfeit items.

A search warrant was the obtained and served at a motel in Bay Minette, which resulted in the seizure of additional electronic devices, according to authorities. Seized were multiple cell phones, laptops, bank cards, and a laser engraver.

Tang and Tan were booked into jail on charges of trafficking stolen identities, theft of trade secrets, and possession of a forgery device. Federal charges are pending further investigation, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
