Tuscaloosa County won a pair of games on Tuesday in advancing to the championship game of the AHSAA Class 7A, Area 5 softball tournament.

The eighth-ranked Wildcats (29-13-1) beat host and fourth-ranked Hoover 2-1 then downed sixth-ranked Thompson 5-3.

The top two teams in each of 16 areas in Class 1A-6A and eight areas in Class 7A advance from the double-elimination tournament to one of four regionals set to begin play on May 9.

The North Regional is at Coffee O’Neal Park in Florence, East Regional at Albertville’s Sand Mountain Park, Central Regional at Montgomery’s Lagoon Park and South Regional at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.

Thompson beat Vestavia Hills 11-1 before falling to Tuscaloosa County and Hoover lost to Vestavia Hills 4-1 in elimination play.

Thompson will play Vestavia Hills for the chance to face Tuscaloosa County.

Tuscaloosa County’s Alyssa Faircloth struck out 19 and scattered 4 hits against Hoover then pitched the final 6 2/3 innings against Thompson, striking out 16.

Alanna Spann was the hitting star against Thompson, belting a 3-run homer and a run-scoring double.
