Tucker Carlson asks Trump if Jeffrey Epstein killed himself, suggests Bill Barr âcovering upâ
Donald Trump gave an interview to former Fox News host Tucker Carlson on X, the social media service formerly known as Twitter, on Wednesday night as his rivals for the 2024 Republican nomination debated.
In one exchange, Carlson asked Trump about financier Jeffrey Epstein who took his own life in 2019 at a federal jail in New York City while he was awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.
“Do you think Epstein killed himself? Sincerely?” Carlson asked.
“I don’t know,” the former president replied. “I will say he was a fixture in Palm Beach.”
Trump said he “had no idea” what former Attorney General Bill Barr said about the death.
“He said he killed himself and they were going to do this investigation. They never did the investigation. It’s never been public and they hid it. Why are they doing that?” Carlson responded. “Clearly Barr knew but why would Bill Barr be covering up the death of Jeffrey Epstein?”
Trump then steered the conversation back to his false claims of 2020 “election fraud,” saying Barr never investigated those claims either.
Inspector General Michael Horowitz cited the federal Bureau of Prisons’ failure to assign Epstein a cellmate after his previous one left and problems with surveillance cameras as factors in Epstein’s death, The Associated Press has reported.
The AP reported stated Horowitz also said that Epstein was left in his cell with too many bed linens, which are a security issue and were used in his suicide. He reiterated the findings of other investigations that there was no indication of foul play, rebutting conspiracy theories surrounding the high-profile death.
