Tuberville vows to vote against Democratic legislation over Trump verdict
Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville lent his signature to a letter Friday vowing vote against any Democratic priority that comes to the Senate floor in response to the guilty verdict against former President Donald Trump.
Tuberville was among eight Republican senators to sign the letter drafted by Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah.
Alabama’s senior senator did not make any statements about why he was signing the letter, but said Thursday’s verdict showed that the American justice system is “no better than Venezuela or China.”
The signatories have vowed to vote against any non-security funding increases for the Biden administration “or any appropriations bill which funds partisan lawfare” because “the White House has made a mockery of the rule of law and fundamentally altered our politics in un-American ways.”
They also pledged to vote against any Biden administration political or judicial nominees and will not :”allow expedited consideration and passage of Democrat legislation or authorities that are not directly relevant to the safety of the American people.”
Lee is keeping the letter open for now, Axios reported, meaning more senators could choose to lend their signatures.
A spokesman for Sen. Katie Britt, R-Ala., could not immediately be reached on whether she plans to sign the letter.
Trump was convicted on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records by a New York City jury in connection with hush money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels, who said she had sex with the married Trump in 2006.
The $130,000 payment came from Trump’s former lawyer and personal fixer Michael Cohen to buy Daniels’ silence during the final weeks of the 2016 race in what prosecutors allege was an effort to interfere in the election. When Cohen was reimbursed, the payments were recorded as legal expenses, which prosecutors said was an unlawful attempt to mask the true purpose of the transaction.
