Tuberville targets swing state Senate Democrats as trans sports bill vote nears

U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville ramped up the pressure on Senate Democrats from swing states states as the upper chamber neared a vote Monday to advance his bill banning transgender athletes from women’s school sports.

The Alabama Republican and former Auburn University football coach is the sponsor of the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, which would ban federal funding from going toward athletic programs that allow transgender athletes to participate in women’s and girls’ sports under Title IX.

On Monday, Tuberville blitzed Senate Democrats from Georgia, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Nevada, Arizona and Michigan on social media, asking them to “stand up” for girls in sports by voting to advance the bill. He also called out vulnerable Senate Democrats.

Tuberville shared polling from those states showing the provisions of his bill are highly popular, including among 73% of Georgia voters and 70% of Arizonans.

A Pew Research Center Survey released last week showed 66% of U.S. adults favor or strongly favor laws and policies that require trans athletes to compete on teams that match their sex assigned at birth.

The Alabama Transgender Rights Action Coalition blasted the bill from conservatives “as the next step in their sexist culture war tactic.”

“The anti-woke mindset is inherently prejudiced, and not just towards transgender women. Conservatives are trying to send the message that cisgender women are only useful as incubators, with executive orders and laws like the ‘What Is a Woman’ Act. They seek to discourage women’s equal participation in the workforce through the stripping away of equal employment protections for women, labeling them ‘DEI,’ the organization said in a statement to AL.com. ”The attack on trans athletes is the next step in their sexist culture war tactic, with the goal of ultimately pushing women back into the kitchen. And just like the suffragettes of the 1840s, the women fighting for the Equal Rights Amendment in the 60s, and all those who fight for reproductive rights today, women — trans and cis alike — will not go quietly.”

A procedural vote to advance the bill is scheduled for Monday night in the Senate, setting up the possibility for a vote on final passage later in the week.

Tuberville’s bill would codify President Donald Trump’s executive order, signed last month, that would yank schools’ Title IX federal funding yanked if they allow trans athletes to participate in women’s sports.

Tuberville, Alabama Sen. Katie Britt and Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall attended the signing ceremony for the order.
