Tuberville suggests Dems hypocrites on guns for wanting undocumented to join military

Sen. Tommy Tuberville on Friday called out what he viewed as Democrats’ hypocrisy on guns, claiming two prominent Democratic senators favor an assault weapons ban yet want undocumented immigrants to serve in the military.

“I heard Sen. Durbin now wants illegal immigrants to serve in the military because we can’t find enough Americans. Did I just not here on the floor Sen. [Dick] Durbin and Sen. [Chuck] Schumer are against assault weapons? I heard that,” the Alabama Repbublican said Friday on the Senate floor, referring to his colleagues from Illinois and New York.

“But they want to turn around and give an assault weapon to a Chinese or a Russian or Iranian that’s come into this country illegally to protect the American citizen of the United States of America. Have we lost our minds?” Tuberville continued.

Durbin’s and Schumer’s offices could not be reached for comment by AL.com.

Alabama’s senior senator appeared to be referring to Durbin’s support of a bill from Democratic Sen. Tammy Duckworth, his Illinois counterpart, that would allow DACA recipients, those with temporary protected status and those with an approved petition for an immigrant visa to enlist in the military.

Duckworth proposed the measure as a way to help the military make up for its recruitment shortfall.

“Our military services are facing unprecedented challenges meeting their recruitment goals—in part due to a historically small pool of eligible recruits,” she said when she introduced the Enlist Act. “With my Enlist Act, we can start addressing this recruiting crisis by enabling the Department of Defense to expand the pool to include long-time residents—like DACA recipients, folks who have Temporary Protected Status and those who have an approved petition for an immigrant visa, subject to visa caps. Allowing highly qualified, long-time residents of our great nation the opportunity to serve the country they’ve come to love is a common-sense way to give the services better access to talented potential recruits and improve our military’s readiness in the process.”

DACA recipients are undocumented immigrants who came to the United States before they were 16 years old and continually resided in the country, among other criteria.

Temporary protected status is not granted to people from China, Russia or Iran, the three countries mentioned by Tuberville. The list of countries, designated by the Homeland Security Department, includes nations that are in the middle of civil war, that have had a natural disaster or “other extraordinary and temporary conditions.”

It also does not include Mexico, the country where most undocumented immigrants come from.
