Tuberville says Republicans ‘don’t need any Democrats’ to confirm Trump’s nominees
U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., on Sunday repeated his call for Republican senators to quickly confirm President-elect Donald Trump’s Cabinet nominees.
On Fox News Channel’s “Sunday Morning Futures,” Trump said it was imperative for Trump to have his team in place when he takes office in January.
“He needs a team around him that’s going to help him. He can’t do it by himself,” Tuberville said.
Trump has picked former Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz, who faced a House ethics investigation, as attorney general, anti-vaccine activist Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as head of the Department of Health and Human Services and Tulsi Gabbard, a former Democratic lawmaker who has in the past publicly expressed sympathy to Russian causes, as director of U.S. intelligence services.
Some of his picks might face difficulties getting confirmed by the Senate, even with Republicans holding a majority in January.
“There’s going to be a lot of hard work,” Tuberville said. “We’ve fought back against this radical agenda from the left. We’ve had to play defense. We’ve had no chance to play offense. Now we have a new head coach in President Trump.”
Tuberville expressed confidence that Republicans can confirm the nominees.
“We’ve got the numbers to do it ourselves. We don’t need any Democrats to help us. We have got the numbers,” Tuberville said.
U.S. Sen. Katie Britt has not said how she will vote on Gaetz or other nominees, except to say they all deserve a chance to make their case during the confirmation process.
Tuberville called Gaetz a “fighter” who is qualified to lead the Department of Justice.
“We need a fighter. We don’t need somebody that is going to wade their way in, feel their way around. Matt Gaetz has been there. He’s seen everything. He’s been up close and personal,” Tuberville said.
“The main thing for President Trump — he needs loyalty. He needs somebody … that is going to watch his back.”
Tuberville last week threatened his Republican colleagues with primary opposition if they do not vote to confirm Gaetz.
