Tuberville says he will not back Matt Gaetz if ‘they can prove’ sex abuse allegations
U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., says he will not vote to confirm Matt Gaetz to become attorney general if current allegations against the former Florida congressman are proven to be credible.
Tuberville told CBS 42 Tuesday that he spoke to Gaetz after he was nominated by president-elect Donald Trump to become the U.S. attorney general last week.
Gaetz resigned from Congress after his nomination but is currently being investigated by the House Ethics Committee for allegedly assaulting a 17-year-old.
Tuberville said he asked Gaetz if he was guilty to which Gaetz responded saying no.
Tuberville then said he told Gaetz, “Good because if it comes out, they can prove something I’m not going to vote for you.”
Tuberville said that Gaetz will not get confirmed if there is “anything following him.”
Gaetz was previously investigated by the Justice Department for sex trafficking allegations. The investigation ended without charges being brought against him.
The House Ethics Committee is scheduled to hold a hearing Wednesday to discuss the ethics report into Gaetz’s allegations. There is currently a struggle within the conservatives in Congress of whether the report should be released publicly.
Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, R-La., told CNN that he does not think the report should be released now that Gaetz has resigned and become a private citizen.
CNN host Jake Tapper told Johnson that the committee has previously released reports even after congressmembers have resigned.
Johnson responded by saying, “I wasn’t the speaker at that time.”
A woman testified to the House Ethics Committee that Gaetz paid her for sex and that she witnessed him having sex with a 17-year-old at a party, The Washington Post reported Monday.
“Florida attorney Joel Leppard said in an interview with The Washington Post that one of his clients witnessed Gaetz having sex with the minor at a drug-fueled party in July 2017 – and that Gaetz was unaware of her age at the time but subsequently was told she was underage,” the report stated.
Tuberville, in an interview on Fox News on Sunday, said Gaetz was the “fighter” Trump needs heading up the Department of Justice.
“The main thing for President Trump — he needs loyalty. He needs somebody … that is going to watch his back.”
Tuberville has previously threatened his Republican colleagues with primary opposition if they do not vote to confirm Gaetz.
