Tuberville says Democrats ruined the electoral process: ‘We’re like a third world country’
U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville on Thursday claimed that Democrats have ruined the electoral process and compared the country’s voting process to a “third world country.”
Tuberville’s remarks came during a discussion on Right Side Radio.
Tuberville said that during his travels across the country he met with many voters who were concerned if their vote would matter. Tuberville blamed Democrats claiming they ruined the electoral process because of early voting and “machines.”
He further stated that this resulted in the voting process becoming similar to a “third world country.”
“It’s a shame the Democrats have ruined everything else, and now they’ve ruined our election process,” Tuberville said, “with machines and voting a month ahead, two months ahead. You know, the process is just absolutely, just crazy. We’re like a third world country when it comes to voting.”
Tuberville’s comments align with conservative sentiment nationally that the voting process is untrustworthy or rigged in favor of Democrats.
Voting machines and claims of widespread fraud have been the target of conspiracy theories from Republicans who assert 2020 presidential election was rigged against Donald Trump following his loss in the 2020 presidential election. There was never any evidence of rigged machines or widespread fraud after reviews of the election results.
Fox News was sued by Dominion Voting Machines, a voting machine company, because the network claimed that the voting equipment was changing votes for Trump into votes for President Joe Biden. Fox News settled the defamation lawsuit for $787 million prior to a trial taking place.
Early voting has also been criticized from the right as a repository of widespread fraud or corruption. But there is no evidence for this either. Voting rights advocates say the claim is meant to prevent forms of convenience voting and suppress the vote.
On Jan. 6, the day of the Capitol insurrection, Tuberville was one of 147 Republicans who voted in opposition to certifying the 2020 presidential results. Tuberville objected to the results that came out of Arizona and said at the time he wanted to ensure that votes for Trump were, “not diminished by voter fraud or election irregularities.”
Ahead of the 2024 presidential election conservatives are pushing the narrative that migrants or non-citizens are trying to vote and do so in favor of Democrats.
