Tuberville now says he disagrees with Alabama Supreme Court embryo ruling: ‘It’s going to be OK’
In a TV interview with reporter Rachel Scott of ABC News today, U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville said that he now disagrees with the Alabama Supreme Court ruling that embryos are protected humans.
“You’ve been back and forth on this issue,” Scott said. “Do you support the Supreme Court’s decision?”
Clinics that conduct in vitro fertilization have shut down their programs in reaction to the ruling.
“I support that people that want to have IVF,” Tuberville said. “I’ll support them 100 percent.”
Scott said the court ruling didn’t allow that.
“Okay, but that’s not what the Supreme Court’s decision is allowing at this point,” Scott said.
“I know, but the state’s getting ready to pass a law in Alabama that it’s going to be OK,” Tuberville said. “When we’re going to pass it, that it’s going to be positive.”
Scott said Alabama women are being denied IVF treatments.
“I just came back from Alabama,” she said. “I talked to one woman. She’s on her last embryo transfer. It was scheduled for tomorrow. And now she has to start all over. Is that acceptable to you?”
“Well, not really,” Tuberville said.
“So, to be clear, you believe it’s the wrong move?” Scott asked.
“Wrong move by the Supreme Court? Yes,” Tuberville said.
Previously, at the Conservative Political Action Conference, Tuberville told NBC reporter Dasha Burns he supported the court ruling.
“Yeah, I was all for it,” Tuberville said. “I thought this was the right thing to do.”
“We need to have more kids, we need to have an opportunity to do that, and I think this was the right thing to do.”
