Tuberville introduces bill codifying Trump DEI executive orders into law
Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., has sponsored a bill that would codify President Trump’s executive order targeting diversity, equity and inclusion [DEI] programs into federal law.
In a statement issued Monday, Alabama’s senior senator referred to DEI as “woke, racist” ideology.
“We must wash our hands of DEI. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris nearly destroyed the fabric of our country with this woke, racist ideology. We need to focus on hiring the best and brightest, not dividing people based on skin color, Tuberville continued.
“Thank God President Trump is restoring merit-based hiring practices to our government,” the senator added. “Now Congress must do our job to ensure that this poisonous ideology has no place in our government.”
Late last month, Trump signed executive orders dismantling DEI programs from federal departments and agencies.
Tuberville’s Dismantle DEI Act, co-sponsored by Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., and introduced in the House by Rep. Michael Cloud, R-Tex., would codify the orders into federal law, meaning that Trump’s successors could not simply reinstate DEI programs.
Among the provisions of the Dismantle DEI Act are:
- Ensuring all DEI offices are terminated and prohibiting agencies from renaming or repurposing them to continue the same functions under new titles.
- Barring federal funds from being used for DEI training, grants, or programs—including identity-based quotas and critical race theory.
- Granting individuals the legal right to challenge any of these violations in court.
Alabama has a its own DEI law that bans DEI programs and training at public colleges, local school boards, and state agencies.
That law is being challenged by professors, students, the NAACP and the ACLU, who claim the legislation is tantamount to censorship that prevents them from learning, teaching, and engaging in classes and programs on diverse viewpoints and topics.
