Tuberville falsely claims ‘men were boxing against women’ during 2024 Olympics

In a social media post, U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala, falsely stated that “men were boxing against women” during the 2024 Olympics.

AL.com asked Tuberville’s office to provide any evidence that “men boxed against women” during the 2024 Olympics.

The senator’s office has not responded yet.

During the 2024 Olympics, boxer Imane Khelif became the subject of controversy after claims arose that she was transgender.

However, those claims were false as Khelif was not born a male, has never identified as being transgender, and is not intersex.

International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach defended Khelif at the time saying there was “never any doubt” she was a woman.

The Alabama Transgender Rights Action Coalition (ALTRAC) said that Tuberville’s comment demonstrates that anti-trans policies and rhetoric can harm cis-women who are not “feminine enough.”

“Tuberville’s false claim demonstrates what we’ve been saying for years — anti-trans rhetoric from Republicans is not about “protecting women,” it is about control. If Imane Khelif (a non-transgender woman) can get caught up in this rhetoric, so can any other woman Republicans deem too successful, too strong, or “not woman enough” — transgender or not. And that rhetoric is already leading to harassment of women who don’t present feminine enough — sometimes even by law enforcement! If Alabama Republicans really mean to protect women from harassment, their words and actions aren’t showing it.”

The false statement from Tuberville was made in reference to him joining a letter with several Republican colleagues demanding that the IOC adopt policies that prevent transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports ahead of the 2028 Olympic Games held in Los Angeles.

The conservative lawmakers stated that the committee should adopt policies similar to President Donald Trump’s executive order dubbed, “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports.”

The order bans transgender women from participating in women’s sports.

Earlier this month Tuberville’s bill titled, the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, failed to pass the Senate after not meeting the 60 vote threshold.

The bill would have banned transgender athletes from participating in girls’ sports under Title IX and halted federal funding for athletic programs that allow transgender athletes to participate.

Tuberville vowed to continue fighting for the legislation saying the vote illustrated that, “Democrats STILL support men competing in women’s sports.”
