Tuberville: Despite their differences, Senate Majority Leader ‘has no choice’ but to support Trump
In an interview this week with Fox News’ The Will Cain Show, U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., said newly elected Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.C., has “got no choice” besides full support of President-elect Donald Trump.
Thune, 63, is in his fourth Senate term and has promised to work closely with Trump, despite differences the two have had over the years, as The Associated Press reported.
In 2020, Thune broke with Trump publicly over the effort to overturn the results of the last presidential election, which he called “inexcusable.”
But in a statement to AP this week, the senator said his team was “united behind President Trump’s agenda.”
Despite his initial endorsement for Rick Scott, R-Fla., Tuberville said he is confident in Thune’s leadership moving forward.
“He’s going to do everything he can to help President Trump,” Tuberville said.
“And I believe that, I really do. He’s a Republican, he comes from a very conservative state…He’s got nothing to lose, and I told him ‘you’ve got nothing to lose’ let’s go full speed ahead.”
“I think John Thune has got his hands full. He can do it but he’s going to have to have a lot of help from all of us. It’s going to be all 53 of us [in the Senate].”
Tuberville said he is hopeful Pete Hegseth, Matt Gaetz, Tulsi Gabbard, and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who have all been selected or are on a short list for Trump’s cabinet in 2025, will be quickly confirmed.
