Tuberville calls Zelenskyy a ‘disgrace’ after fiery Oval Office meeting with Trump
U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala. said that he was grateful for Donald Trump’s leadership following a heated exchange between the President and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday.
Following the meeting, Zelenskyy abruptly left the White House without signing a critical mineral rights deal with the U.S. that Trump had demanded and suggested was a condition for future support for Ukraine, according to AP News.
“I have determined that President Zelenskyy is not ready for Peace if America is involved, because he feels our involvement gives him a big advantage in negotiations” Trump wrote in a statement posted to X Friday.
“He disrespected the United States of America in its cherished Oval Office. He can come back when he is ready for Peace.”
Tuberville reposted Trump’s statement and said that “Zelenskyy is an absolute disgrace.”
“He has happily taken the $220 billion American taxpayer dollars that Joe Biden gave him without showing an ounce of gratitude or delivering any results,” Tuberville wrote.
“We should not send Ukraine another cent.”
Tensions came to a head after Zelenskyy urged Trump not to trust Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Although Trump said he believed that the Russian leader would stick to a peace deal if one were struck, Zelenskyy pointed out that Ukraine has signed multiple agreements with Russia that were then broken.
As the meeting drew to a close, Trump said that if Ukraine could not negotiate a deal with the U.S., they “wouldn’t have the cards” to resolve their conflict with Russia.
Zelenskyy thanked Trump and Congress in a post to X later on Friday, writing that “Ukraine needs just and lasting peace, and we are working exactly for that.”
