Tuberville calls NIL rules âa disasterâ as Auburn, Alabama officials lobby Congress
U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville on Wednesday called the regulations governing the NCAA’s name, image and likeness rules and state laws for athletes “a disaster” as Alabama and Auburn administrators and coaches discussed the issues with lawmakers in Washington.
“Today we are meeting with coaches, athletic directors and administrators from several different conferences here in Washington, D.C., talking about the disastrous new NIL rules. And they are a disaster,” Tuberville said in a video he sent to USA Today, the outlet reported.
Tuberville, who along with Sen. Joe Manchin, D-West Va., a longtime friend of Alabama football coach Nick Saban, are crafting legislation addressing NIL, said players deserve to be paid but the regulations and NCAA transfer rules can be improved.
“I’m for players being able to be compensated for their hard work in athletics as well as academics. We have to come to some kind of agreement where we can help the NCAA make improvements to this runaway NIL situation that we’re in as we speak,” he said, according to USA Today.
“Players transferring at any time? Players making deals with the help of agents with schools and then not being compensated after making these deals? We’re looking out for the player as much as for the university,” the senator continued. But we’re looking out for education and we’re looking out for the sanctity of college sports.”
Administrators and coaches from both Alabama and Auburn were in the nation’s capital, meeting with lawmakers on the future of college sports.
Several members of Alabama’s congressional delegation tweeted photos of the meetings:
