Tuberville against ‘another damn trial’ in possible Biden impeachment

As House Republicans intend to launch an impeachment inquiry of President Joe Biden, Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville is skeptical anything will ever come of it.

Noting that 2024 is an election year, Tuberville told CNN, “I don’t think they got enough time to do it.”

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy announced Tuesday at a press conference in Washington that he is instructing three House committees to open an impeachment inquiry into Biden. The case is expected to revolve around Biden and his son’s Hunter’s business dealings.

As a senator, Tuberville would be a member of the jury should the House impeach Biden and bring him to trial in the Senate. His comments, reported Monday by CNN, seemed to suggest he is less than enthusiastic about a Biden impeachment despite being a strong supporter of former president and Republican presidential primary frontrunner Donald Trump.

At this point, Biden and Trump are expected to oppose each other in November 2024 in the general election. Biden, of course, defeated the incumbent Trump in 2020.

“You better have an ironclad case,” Tuberville said of a possible House impeachment, according to CNN. “When you go after a former president or a president, have all of your ducks in a row. Make sure you got what you need to have. Don’t be guessing. Don’t just be throwing mud.”

Tuberville voted to acquit Trump when he was impeached following the seizing of the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2020.

“I’m not for going through another damn trial to be honest with you,” Tuberville told CNN.

Some House Republicans are making the push for a Biden impeachment despite, as The Associated Press reported, “unsubstantiated claims that he played a role in his son’s foreign business affairs during his time as vice president.”

McCarthy has described an impeachment inquiry — which does not necessarily mean an impeachment vote would be taken — as a “natural step forward.”
