Tuberville ‘launching baseless political attacks’ on military nominees, service secretaries write

The secretaries of the Air Force, Army and Navy say Sen. Tommy Tuberville’s hold on military promotions is “exacting a personal toll on those who least deserve it.”

In an opinion piece in Monday’s edition of The Washington Post, Secretary of the Air Force Frank Kendall, Secretary of the Army Christine Wormuth and Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro said Tuberville’s hold is “putting our national security at risk.”

“Looking over the horizon, the prolonged uncertainty and political battles over these military nominations will have a corrosive effect on the force,” the secretaries wrote in the piece.

Tuberville began the hold in February over Defense policies that expand abortion access, including reimbursing military members for travel to obtain an abortion if they are serving in an area where the procedure is illegal. The senator says he believes the policies are illegal and can only be made by Congress.

According to the opinion piece, the hold now affects more than 300 members of the military.

“Three of our five military branches — the Army, Navy and Marine Corps — have no Senate-confirmed service chief in place. Instead, these jobs — and dozens of others across the force — are being performed by acting officials without the full range of legal authorities necessary to make the decisions that will sustain the United States’ military edge,” the secretaries wrote.

Attempts to reach Tuberville’s office for comment were not immediately successful.

The hold is forcing officers to perform two roles at once, placing a “real and unfair burden on these officers, the organizations they lead and their families.”

The resulting domino effect, they argue, is doing harm to the service, as some officers are being forced to maintain two residences, and their spouses are unable to look for jobs, they said.

The secretaries also blasted Tuberville for suggesting “he is going to further escalate this confrontation by launching baseless political attacks against these men and women.”

They were referring to comments Tuberville made last week that the hold has given him “more time to look more closely into the background of some these nominees.”
