Tua Tagovailoa works toward ‘later parts of the season’

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa broke out and broke down during the 2022 NFL season.

In his third pro campaign, the former Alabama All-American had the NFL’s best passing-efficiency rating as he had 25 touchdown passes and, until the final quarter of his last appearance of the season, five interceptions.

But because of two concussions, Tagovailoa missed five full games, including the Dolphins’ first playoff contest since 2016.

“Offseason training’s been good,” Tagovailoa said on Monday night. “Been working on strength in many areas and been chipping away at things that I felt like I needed to work on to get to where I feel I can get to in the later parts of the season.”

Tagovailoa missed the Dolphins’ final two regular-season games and a 34-31 loss to the Buffalo Bills in the AFC playoffs after entering the NFL’s concussion protocol on Dec. 26, the day after a 26-20 loss to the Green Bay Packers that featured the quarterback throwing three interceptions in the fourth quarter.

Tagovailoa also missed two games after leaving in the first half of a 27-15 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on Sept. 29 with a concussion. In that game, Tagovailoa left the field on a stretcher and went to University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

Because both of Tagovailoa’s concussions appeared to have occurred when the back of his helmet hit the ground, the quarterback has incorporated jiu jitsu into his offseason regimen to learn how to fall better.

Tagovailoa spoke to media members on Monday night at his Luau with Tua event, a fundraiser for the Tua Foundation. The quarterback joked that a jiu jitsu demonstration would not be part of the night’s entertainment at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida.

Tagovailoa has been cleared to rejoin the team when the Dolphins kick off their offseason program on Monday.

Since the end of the 2022 season, Miami has brought in veteran coordinator and former NFL head coach Vic Fangio to take charge of the team’s defense, added six-time Pro Bowl cornerback Jalen Ramsey in a trade with the Los Angeles Rams and signed eight unrestricted free agents from other teams.

Tagovailoa already has had throwing sessions with teammates, including 1,000-yard wide receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle as the Dolphins approach preparations for a season in which they’ll likely be considered Super Bowl contenders.

“I’m very excited,” Tagovailoa said. “I think our entire team is excited to get back out there, get to meet a lot of the newer guys, a lot of the newer guys getting to meet the guys that have been in this system for a whole year now, so it’s very exciting.

“And I think a lot of fans, the community, everyone is very supportive, and you can feel their support, and everyone’s excited.”
