Tua Tagovailoa up for Comeback Player of the Year Award

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is a finalist for The Associated Press NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award.

The AP and the NFL announced the finalists for eight end-of-season awards on Thursday, and Tagovailoa and three other Alabama alumni are among the possible award winners.

Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs is a finalist for the AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Award.

Houston Texans defensive end Will Anderson Jr. is a finalist for the AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award.

The Texans’ DeMeco Ryans is a finalist for the AP NFL Coach of the Year Award.

Former West Alabama standout Tyreek Hill of the Dolphins is a finalist for the AP Offensive Player of the Year Award after leading the NFL with 1,799 receiving yards and 13 touchdown receptions in 2023.

The awards will be presented during the NFL Honors program on Feb. 8 in Las Vegas.

After suffering two concussions during the 2022 season that caused him to miss five-and-half games, Tagovailoa led the NFL with 4,624 passing yards in 2023.

The other finalists for the Comeback Player of the Year Award are Cleveland Browns quarterback Joe Flacco, Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin, Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield and Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford.

Joining Gibbs as finalists for the Offensive Rookie of the Year Award are Lions tight end Sam LaPorta, Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua, Atlanta Falcons running back Bijan Robinson and Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud.

Anderson was named the winner of the Pro Football Writers of America’s NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award on Tuesday. The other finalists for the AP version of the award are Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter, Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr., Rams defensive tackle Kobie Turner and Seattle Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon.

In his first season as a head coach, Ryans led Houston to a seven-victory improvement, the AFC South title and a first-round playoff victory. The other finalists for the AP Coach of the Year Award are the Lions’ Dan Campbell, the Baltimore Ravens’ John Harbaugh, the San Francisco 49ers’ Kyle Shanahan and the Cleveland Browns’ Kevin Stefanski.

Hill is up for the AP Offensive Player of the Year Award with Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson, Dallas Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and quarterback Dak Prescott and 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey.
