Tua Tagovailoa starts season with NFL weekly award

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is the AFC Offensive Player of the Week for Week 1 of the 2023 NFL season.

In the Dolphins’ 36-34 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, the former Alabama All-American completed 28-of-45 passes for 466 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. Each of the TD passes moved Miami into the lead, and Tagovailoa had nine completions that gained at least 22 yards.

Tagovailoa posted the fourth-most passing yards in a Week 1 game in NFL history.

The other Player of the Week Award winners for Week 1 included San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, NFC Offensive; New York Jets S Jordan Whitehead, AFC Defensive; Atlanta Falcons S Jessie Bates, NFC Defensive; Jets wide receiver Xavier Gipson, AFC Offensive; and Philadelphia Eagles kicker Jake Elliott, NFC Offensive.

Tagovailoa also won the AFC Offensive Player of the Week Award for Week 2 of the 2022 season.
