Tua Tagovailoa gets new target at tight end with Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins had the No. 1 passing offense in the NFL in 2023 as quarterback Tua Tagovailoa threw for 4,624 yards.

Miami tight ends accounted for 414 yards of that total and did not score a touchdown on any of their 41 receptions.

The Dolphins augmented their tight-end depth chart on Thursday by reaching a contract agreement with Jonnu Smith, who had 50 receptions for 582 yards and three touchdowns for the Atlanta Falcons in 2023.

Smith was available because the Falcons released him on Feb. 28 to clear $6.5 million off their salary-cap obligations for the 2024 season.

Smith is joining the Dolphins on a two-year contract that could be worth as much as $10 million, the Miami Herald and ESPN reported on Thursday afternoon.

Durham Smythe is Miami’s top returning tight end. He had 35 receptions for 366 yards in 2023, when Tagovailoa led the league in passing yards and threw for 29 touchdowns.

In the former Alabama All-American’s first full season as the Dolphins’ starting quarterback, Mike Gesicki led a tight-end corps that had 122 receptions for 1,271 yards and two touchdowns in 2021. In 2022, Miami’s first season under coach Mike McDaniels, the Dolphins’ tight ends had 47 receptions for 491 yards and six touchdowns.
