Trump signs IVF order a year after Alabama Supreme Court ruling: ‘Another promise kept,’ Katie Britt says
President Donald Trump on Tuesday signed an executive order creating a task force that will look at ways to make in-vitro fertilization more affordable.
“These are treatments that have become unaffordable for many Americans, have been unaffordable for many Americans, and the executive orders a directive of a domestic policy council to examine ways to make IVF and other fertility treatments more affordable for more Americans,” a White House aide said.
Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, said the order “directs policy recommendations to protect IVF access and aggressively reduce out-of-pocket and health plan costs for such treatments.”
In-vitro fertilization became a nationwide issue following a controversial Alabama Supreme Court ruling on Feb. 16, 2024 declared frozen embryos have the same rights as children.
The decision drew nationwide backlash and spurred IVF clinics in Alabama to halt operations amid concern that they would face lawsuits.
It also led the Alabama Legislature to pass a bill giving IVF clinics immunity from criminal and civil lawsuits.
Infirmary Health, which runs Mobile Infirmary, announced in April that it will no longer provide IVF treatments beginning in 2025.
Trump has said he received a phone call from Sen. Katie Britt about IVF soon after the controversial ruling.
Britt, the president said, was unaware of her friends who had undergone or were undergoing IVF who became concerned after the ruling.
“She said, ‘They’re literally attacking me,’” Trump recalled. “I know this, if you’re a woman, you’re not going to be telling Katie Britt, you;re not going to be telling your friends, ‘Hey, I’m going through IVF.’ Some will and some won’t.”
Trump said his position on IVF was formed five minutes into the phone call with Britt, adding that he “came out strongly in favor” of protecting the treatments “within 45 minutes” of the Alabama Supreme Court decision.
Alabama’s junior senator hailed the president’s order in a Tuesday tweet while thanking Trump.
“Yet another promise kept,” Britt tweeted.
“IVF is profoundly pro-family, and I’m proud to work with President Trump on ensuring more loving parents can start and grow their families.”
