Trump has 47 point lead over GOP rivals, poll shows
Former President Trump has a commanding lead over his 2024 Republican rivals, according to a new poll.
The Emerson College poll showed Trump has a 47-point lead over his closest competitor for the GOP presidential primary, his largest lead since tracking of the rate started in June 2022. Trump’s support increased 9 points since last month’s national poll to 59% while support for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis stayed the same at 12% and Vivek Ramaswamy fell two points to 7%, pollsters said.
Chris Christie and Mike Pence follow with 5% respectively, Nikki Haley at 3%, and Tim Scott at 2%.
Five percent of GOP voters said they remain undecided.
“The Trump voter remains resilient, and despite a dip in August’s post-debate poll, Trump has now expanded his lead and has improved his position from before the first debate,” Spencer Kimball, Executive Director of Emerson College Polling, said.
Overall, 64% of Republican primary voters said they will “definitely” support their chosen candidate though 36% said they are open to voting for someone else.
Trump’s backers remain resolute, the poll shows.
“Seventy-five percent of Trump voters say they will definitely support him in the Republican primary, up four points since the August survey, while 42% say the same of Ron DeSantis — a significant hardening among supporters of DeSantis since August, when 25% said the same,” Matt Taglia, new Senior Director at Emerson College Polling, said.
The poll showed Trump and President Biden were the choices of 45% of prospective voters. Ten percent remain undecided.
The poll was conducted Sept. 17-18 among 1,125 voters and has a margin of error of 2.8 percentage points.
