Trump classified docs indictment latest example of DOJ ‘weaponization’: Rogers

The indictment of former President Donald Trump in connection with alleged mishandling of classified documents is “the most sinister turn yet” of President Biden’s “weaponization of the Justice Department,” an Alabama congressman said Friday.

“The weaponization of the Justice Department by Biden has taken its most sinister turn yet,” tweeted Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Saks. “The endless political persecution of Pres. Trump is un-American and must end now. The rule of law has no meaning anymore to radical Democrats. Those responsible must be held accountable.”

Rogers, the chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, is the third member of Alabama’s congressional delegation to release a statement in support of Trump after the former president posted on social media that he was being federally indicted.

Republicans have accused Biden of using the Justice Department to wound his former opponent and frontrunner for the GOP presidential nomination in 2024.

But the decision to indict Trump in connection with the classified documents investigation did not come from Attorney General Merrick Garland but from Jack Smith, the special counsel appointed by Garland in November.

“Based on recent developments, including the former President’s announcement that he is a candidate for President in the next election, and the sitting President’s stated intention to be a candidate as well, I have concluded that it is in the public interest to appoint a special counsel,” Garland said in a statement at the time.

“Such an appointment underscores the Department’s commitment to both independence and accountability in particularly sensitive matters,” he continued. It also allows prosecutors and agents to continue their work expeditiously, and to make decisions indisputably guided only by the facts and the law.”

On Thursday, Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., and U.S. Rep. Barry Moore, R-Enterprise, accused the Justice Department of putting its thumb on the scale.

“The same DOJ that labeled parents questioning school boards as ‘domestic terrorists’ are now doing everything in their power to stop @realDonaldTrump from retaking the White House,” Tuberville said, referring to a Republican talking point that has been labeled a false claim by factcheck.org.

“The Biden Administration is the most corrupt in American history,” the senator continued.

Rep. Barry Moore, R-Enterprise, used similar language to describe the Justice Department.

“[Thursday night’s] news is another alarming chapter in the complete weaponization of our government. Biden’s corrupt Justice Department has gone after parents, Catholic parishioners, pro-life Christians, and now his top political opponent,” he said. “America’s political battles belong at the ballot box, not in the hands of Biden’s DOJ.”
