Trump claims he broke Elvis Presley’s record crowd at Alabama ‘state fair’
The Donald dethroned The King?
During one of his signature tangents while addressing a rally in Ohio over the weekend, Donald Trump claimed to have broken Elvis Presley’s attendance record at the Alabama State Fair, despite neither man making an appearance at the festival.
Trump appeared to have confused his 2021 rally in Cullman, where he stumped for Mo Brooks’ campaign for U.S. Senate, with a visit to the fair, which never took place. He told the crowd in Vandalia, Ohio of Brooks asking him to campaign for him in Alabama when he made the attendance claim.
“Mo Brooks got up. He said, ‘Sir, I’d really appreciate it.’ And we went to the state fair – 68,000 people showed up at the state fair,” Trump said.
“And an old guy came out, it looked like he was about 103. He said, ‘You know, you did something I never thought would happen in Alabama.’ He said, ‘I’ve been at this place for 60 years, 70 years — a long time — and you just broke the attendance record of a man named Elvis Presley.’ Can you believe that? He said, ‘You just broke it, man,” the former president continued.
Trump never made an appearance at the Alabama State Fair, which occurs in Birmingham.
And neither did Presley.
The King of Rock performed at the Mississippi-Alabama Fair and Dairy Show in September 1956, but the event did not take place in Cullman. Or Birmingham. Or Alabama.
Presley took the stage in Tupelo, Mississippi.
Trump’s Cullman appearance also didn’t get a crowd of 68,000.
The U.S. Secret Service estimated the crowd at 45,000 people, according to Deputy Chad Whaley of the Cullman County sheriff’s office. The Morgan County sheriff’s office also posted on its Facebook page it had been given an estimate of 45,000.
During his Ohio rally on Saturday, Trump also attempted to rewrite history about rescinding his endorsement of Brooks in favor of eventual Sen. Katie Britt.
Trump brought up how Brooks told the crowd in Cullman to put the 2020 election “behind you” as the former president continued to dispute the results.
“There are some people who are despondent about the voter fraud election theft of 2020,” Brooks said at the August 2021 rally. “Folks, put that behind you.”
Trump said he was backstage being interviewed by ‘ABC fake News’ at the time.
“Mo Brooks gets up and he says, ‘Let’s forget about the election, the election was fine … we have to get on to the future.’ He got booed,” Trump said.
As a result, Trump said, Brooks lost a significant lead in the GOP primary runoff to Britt.
“I endorsed (Britt) the following morning,” Trump said. “We have another senator now because people don’t want to hear bullshit.”
However, nearly 10 months passed between the rally and when Trump endorsed Britt.
He withdrew his endorsement of Brooks in March 2022 and endorsed Britt in June 2022. She won the runoff less than two weeks after his endorsement.
“It’s quite clear that Donald Trump has no loyalty to anyone or anything but himself,” Brooks said after the Britt endorsement. “He looked at who he thought had the best chance of winning and that’s who he endorsed. It had nothing to do with philosophy of government other than that, he abandoned the conservative movement and the MAGA agenda in order to try to improve the reputation of his brand.”
