Trump a ‘dangerous dictator,’ majority of Americans say in new poll marking first 100 days in office
A majority of Americans view President Donald Trump as a “dangerous dictator,” according to a poll released as Trump hit the 100 days in office milestone.
The Public Religion Research Institute poll released Tuesday also showed Trump’s net approval rating underwater by 13 points.
Asked if “President Trump is a dangerous dictator whose power should be limited before he destroys American democracy,” 52% of respondents said they agree with that statement.
Meanwhile, 44% agreed that “President Trump is a strong leader who should be given the power he needs to restore America’s greatness.”
A vast majority of Democrats — 87% — agree that Trump is a “dangerous dictator while only 19% of Republicans feel that way, the poll found.
Like other surveys, the PRRI poll shows Trump struggling.
Just 43% of Americans approve of the way Trump is handling his job as president while 54% disapprove of how Trump is doing his job.
The president’s largest share of support came from white Christians, including 76% support from white Evangelical Protestants. Just one-third of other religious Americans approve of how Trump is doing his job.
Immigration has proven to be Trump’s greatest strength, with 48% of Americans approving of his handling of that issue.
Just 41% approve of Trump’s performance on the economy and 40% approve of his job on Russia’s war with Ukraine, the poll found.
Trump’s disappointing approval ratings are still higher than Vice President JD Vance and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who has a high-profile administration role with the Department of Government Efficiency.
Vance’s approval rating is just 35%, with half of Americans holding an unfavorable opinion of the vice president.
Musk’s disapproval rating is the highest of the bunch at 58%.
The world’s richest person also has a much lower approval rating among Republicans compared to Trump.
Musk’s approval with Republicans stands at 71% while Trump has an 83% approval with Republicans.
