Troy’s Matthew Caldwell honored by Sun Belt Conference
Troy quarterback Matthew Caldwell is the Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week, it was announced Monday.
Caldwell accounted for all four of the Trojans’ touchdowns in a 28-20 victory at Georgia Southern this past Saturday, passing for two scores and rushing for two more. The junior from Auburn — a Gardner-Webb transfer — completed 26 of 32 passes for 288 yards, and scored the game-clinching touchdown on a 1-yard quarterback sneak with 2:32 remaining.
Caldwell has started four games this season for the Trojans, who are 3-7 overall and 2-4 in Sun Belt Conference play. He has thrown for 1,195 yards and eight touchdowns with six interceptions and has also run for three TDs.
Troy travels to meet first-place Louisiana (8-2, 5-1) on Saturday, with kickoff set for 4 p.m. at Cajun Field and live streaming available via ESPN+. It was also announced Monday that the Trojans’ Nov. 30 season finale vs. Southern Miss will kick off at 1 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Stadium, and will stream via ESPN+.
Arkansas State defensive lineman Bryan Whitehead was named Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week after totaling five tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, a quarterback hurry and a fumble recovery in a 27-20 win over Georgia State.
Marshall defensive back J.J. Roberts earned Special Teams Player of the Week honors after blocking a field goal that was returned for a touchdown in a 31-19 victory over Coastal Carolina.
