Troy’s Kimani Vidal named SBC Offensive Player of Year

Troy running back Kimani Vidal was named Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Year in voting announced Thursday.

Vidal, a junior from Marietta, Ga., has rushed for 1,349 yards and nine touchdowns this season for the Trojans, who are 10-2 heading into Saturday’s Sun Belt championship game vs. Appalachian State. Vidal’s rushing total is a single-season Troy record, as are his 3,698 career yards.

Vidal also earned a spot on the All-Sun Belt first-team, along with defensive linemen Richard Jibunor and Javon Solomon and cornerback Reddy Steward. It’s the second straight first-team selection for Steward, a senior from Decatur who is tied for the Sun Belt lead with four interceptions and also has 39 tackles, eight pass breakups and four tackles for loss this season.

Jibunor and Solomon have formed one of the more formidable pass-rushing tandems in the Sun Belt once again this season. Jibunor — a senior from Delta State, Nigeria — has 53 tackles, nine sacks, 16 tackles for loss and four forced fumbles this season, while Solomon — a junior from Tallahassee, Fla. — has 44 tackles, 14 sacks, 15 tackles for loss, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery in 2023.

Third-teamers are quarterback Gunnar Watson, wide receivers Jabre Barber and Chris Lewis and safety Irshaad Davis. Earning honorable mention are defensive lineman Buddha Jones, cornerback O’shai Fletcher, safety Caleb Ransaw and long snapper Quentin Skinner.
