Troyâs Lewis named Sun Belt baseball player of the year
Troy left fielder Shane Lewis has been named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year in baseball for 2023, the league office announced Monday.
Lewis, a Chipola (Fla.) State College transfer, is also the Sun Belt Newcomer of the Year. The redshirt sophomore from Vicksburg, Miss., leads the conference in home runs (27), slugging percentage (.774) and OPS (1.231) heading into this week’s Sun Belt tournament in Montgomery.
Lewis — who redshirted at Mississippi State in 2021 before transferring to Chipola — also leads the Trojans in runs (61), RBI (76), total bases (151) and walks (42). His home run total is a Troy single-season record, and ranks second behind Florida’s Jac Caglianone for the NCAA Division I lead.
Lewis is the first Trojan named Sun Belt Player of the Year in baseball since Adam Bryant in 2011. Bryant shared the award that year with FIU’s Pablo Bermudez.
Southern Miss’ Tanner Hall was Sun Belt Pitcher of the Year, while Coastal Carolina catcher Caden Bodine took home Freshman of the Year honors. Georgia Southern catcher J.P. Tighe won the Tony Robichaux leadership award. Coastal’s Gary Gilmore was named Coach of the Year.
Lewis was also named first-team All-Sun Belt, along with Trojans pitcher Grayson Stewart and third baseman Caleb Bartolero. Relief pitcher Noah Manning earned second-team honors.
South Alabama had one player on the All-Sun Belt second-team, center fielder Will Turner.
Troy earned the No. 3 seed for the Sun Belt tournament, which begins Tuesday at Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery. The Trojans (38-18) open tournament play at 9 a.m. Wednesday vs. No. 6 Appalachian State.
