Troy stuns South Alabama with late comeback, 61-57

Troy scored the final seven points of the game to stun South Alabama 61-57 on Thursday night at Trojan Arena.

The Jaguars (11-14, 5-8 Sun Belt Conference) did not score in the final 2 ½ minutes as the Trojans (15-11, 7-6) rallied from a 9-point deficit in the second half. Nelson Phillips stole the ball away from South Alabama on back-to-back possessions, converting the latter into two points and a 58-57 Troy lead with 45 seconds to play.

Troy made just 3 of 5 free throws in the final 36 seconds, but South Alabama failed on three attempts to tie or take the lead. Kevin Samuel missed the front end of a 1-and-1 on the first try, Judah Brown misfired on a wide-open 3-pointer on the second and Tyrell Jones missed badly on a 3 attempt on the third.

Christyon Turner finally iced the game with a free throw with 1.5 seconds to play, avenging the Trojans’ 77-60 loss in Mobile on Jan. 28. Phillips led Troy with 16 points on Thursday, 10 in the final 8:07 of game time.

Brown led South Alabama with 16 points, including four 3-pointers, the last giving his team a 50-41 lead with 11:34 to play. The Trojans outscored the Jaguars 20-7 from that point on.

Jones added 13 points for South Alabama, though Troy held Isaiah Moore and Kevin Samuel well below their averages. Moore came in averaging 19 points per game, but scored only 13 on 7-for-20 shooting.

Samuel, averaging nearly a double-double per game, had 13 rebounds, but did not score. The Jaguars’ big man was 0-for-1 from the field and 0-for-3 from the line.

Kieffer Punter added 12 points for Troy, while Aamer Muhammad chipped in 11. Zay Williams had eight points and 13 rebounds for the Trojans, who won despite going 5-for-20 on 3-point attempts and missing seven free throws.

South Alabama returns home to face Appalachian State at 5 p.m. Saturday. Troy hosts Louisiana at 4 p.m. the same day.
